Dear all,

Just a quick reminder regarding code submissions:
A submission will only be graded if all public tests are passed, not just the public tests associated with specific parts of the exercise (cf. this Forum post).

We know this might be a bit different from what you’re used to in other courses (such as Programming 2), so we were more lenient when grading your first assignment. From now on, however, we’ll be enforcing this rule more consistently.

If you have any problems with the assignments, feel free to use the forum or the office hours to ask for help.

Kind regards,

The Bioinfo2 Team

Bioinformatics 2

This course builds on the Bioinformatics 1 lecture and the lectures are taught in English. While Bioinformatics 1 focuses on sequence-based bioinformatics methods, the Bioinformatics 2 lecture focuses on the bioinformatics theory and practice of molecular structures and interactions. Topics include:

  • Protein structures
  • Assignment and prediction of secondary structures
  • Supervised machine learning
  • Deep learning
  • Homology modeling
  • Molecular docking
  • Drug sensitivity prediction
  • Trustworthy AI
  • Molecular representations
  • Clustering
  • QSAR

Requirements

The course has no formal prerequisites for participation. However, participants should have prior knowledge from the following courses in order to participate successfully, as we assume familiarity with the relevant content and build upon it:
  • Mathematics for Computer Scientists 1 and 2
  • Biostatistics Lab or Mathematics for Computer Scientists 3
  • Programming 2
  • Bioinformatics 1

In addition, knowledge of Python programming is required for exam admission (see the Exam Admission section). The first lecture will include an introduction to Python specifically aimed at participants who already know other programming languages (e.g., from Programming 2 and Bioinformatics 1) but cannot yet program in Python.

Lectures

Tuesday, 2:15–4:00 p.m., Building E2.1, Lecture Hall 007
Thursday, 2:15–4:00 p.m., Building E2.1, Lecture Hall 007

The first lecture will take place on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, in Building E2.1, Room 003 (aka the CIP Pool, directly to the left of the entrance).

On this day, we will not be holding a lecture in the traditional sense, but rather a Python crash course (see the Requirements section). Therefore, we ask that you bring your laptop if possible and install Python 3, conda, a text editor of your choice (e.g., VS Code), and Git beforehand. You will also need an account for the SIC GitLab to work on the programming projects. You must provide the corresponding username when registering for the course. If you can no longer find your SIC account credentials, you can reset your password here using your student email address.

Tutorials

Tutorials: Mondays 8:30–10:00 a.m., Building E2.1, Lecture Hall 007

Office Hours: Wednesday 2:00–4:00 p.m., Building E2.1, Lecture Hall 007

Exam Admission

To be eligible for the exam, each of the following conditions must be met:

  • 50% score on the mini-tests
  • No more than 2 mini-tests missed
  • 50% score on the programming assignments
  • No more than 2 programming assignment sheets not submitted
  • Passing the regular code reviews
  • Passing the challenge

More detailed information on this will be discussed again in the first lecture.

Exam Dates

Main Exam: 14.07.2026 2:00–4:00 p.m., Building E2.1, Lecture Hall 007

Re-exam: 29.09.2026 2:00–4:00 p.m., Building E1.3, Lecture Hall HS003

Requirements for Course Credit

Passing the exam or re-exam.
