Introduction to Theoretical Computer Science

Dear students,

Please note the following information regarding the endterm exam:

• All exercise sheets are now graded and the points are visible on your Personal Status page.
  • To be admitted to the exam you need at least 96 points.
• Please don't forget to register in LSF-HISPOS/VIPA/etc. Note that the deadlines for this may vary.
  • Note that there is no possibility of late registration at all. 
  • If you have technical difficulties with the registration in LSF-HISPOS, please contact your examination office per email before the deadline.
  • Unlike the midterm, there is no manual registration in the CMS needed. In the upcoming week, we will regularly import LSF-HISPOS registrations into the CMS.
  • If you are unable to use the LSF-HISPOS/VIPA due to your course of study, you have to register with Alexander Rogvoskyy via E-Mail (see team page) until the 4th of February.
• You are allowed to bring a single(!) handwritten(!) DIN A4-sheet. You may write on both sides. Photocopies and printouts are not allowed!
  • We ask you to hand in the sheet together with the exam. You may not take it back home with you. You may, of course, make copies of it to keep before the exam.

Additional XXL-Office Hours & Special Tutorial Sheet

To help you prepare for the exam, we are offering additional office hours:

• 09th February 12:00-16:00, E1.3 seminar room 015
• 10th February 14:00-18:00, E1.3 seminar room 015

In addition, the tutorial sheet for tomorrows tutorial will be a special sheet containing more exercises than usual. You may pick the exercises you want to practice for preparation.

 

• As a reminder for those students that already have the exam admission, you may register to the endterm exam in LSF-HISPOS/VIPA/etc.
  • If you are unable to use the LSF-HISPOS/VIPA due to your course of study, you have to register with Alexander Rogvoskyy via E-Mail (see team page) until the 4th of February.
• The last sheet will be graded on Friday. We will publish the results soon afterwards. Your admission status will be definitely clear by then.

Homework Correction

The homework contained a small typo [1] and is now fixed. You will find the new version in the materials.

 

Midterm Inspection for those who could not attend due to black ice

Tomorrow (Tuesday) in the office hour, those of you who could not make it to the midterm inspection due to black ice can look at their midterm exams. Please note that this is only possible if you

• did not have an inspection yet and
• could not attend the main inspection due to black ice

Some of you have already contacted my via email about it. For the others: If you belong to the group of students above, and would like your midterm inspected in the office hour tomorrow, please write me an email until tomorrow 10am.

 

Special Sheet for those who missed the Midterm

This concerns only those people who could not attend the midterm for valid reasons (sickness etc.) and have contacted me afterwards: You will get an opportunity to catch up the points needed for admission. You will receive a separate e-mail from me regarding this. Should you not receive any email until the end of today, please reach out to me or your tutors.

In the lecture, AEP was defined as the set of functions that are ≥0 almost everywhere. This definition has some subtle problems (for those curious, we can discuss this in the forum).

Therefore, we are redefining AEP as the set of functions from the natural numbers to the real numbers that are >0 almost everywhere. This is also more consistent with its name (almost everywhere positive).

Note that this has implications for task 2 in the current exercise sheet, as the zero function cannot be used as a counterexample anymore.

The Midterm has been graded; you can see your points on your personal status page. As a reminder, those points count towards your exam admission in a similar fashion as the points from the assignment sheets.

You will have a chance to review the midterm during your usual tutorial session on Monday, 12th January.

As a short reminder, for those of you who have registered for the midterm, please be at your respective lecture hall at 16:00 (sharp) at the latest.

If you are registered but cannot attend the midterm due to sickness, please write us an email until this Thursday with a doctor's notice.

On Wednesday, there will be a lecture as usually.

Please note the following information:

• The midterm exam will take place on the 2nd of December 2025 at 16:00.
• The exam writing time will be 150 minutes.
• In order to guarantee a smooth process, we ask you to be there at 16:00 sharp (s.t.) at the latest.
• You can see which lecture hall you are writing the exam in on your Personal Status page.
• Please bring your student ID, as well as an official photo ID (ID card/passport/...).
• Please bring a blue or black non-erasable pen, for example a ballpoint pen, but not pencils.
• You are allowed to bring a single(!) handwritten(!) DIN A4-sheet. You may write on both sides. Photocopies and printouts are not allowed!
  • We ask you to hand in the sheet together with the exam. You may not take it back home with you.
• Relevant for the midterm is the lecture content up to and including last week (with the last included lecture being the one on 21st November). This week is not relevant for the midterm.
• The midterm will be worth 32 points.

There will be no exercise sheet released today. You may use the time to prepare for the midterm. In the upcoming tutorial, you may ask any last-minute questions.

Due to the midterm, we will not have an office hour on Tuesday.

Please note the following information:

• The Midterm will take place on Tuesday, December 2nd.

• In order to participate, you have to register in the CMS (in your personal status page)

  • For the midterm, no registration in the LSF/HISPOS/VIPA is necessary, only the registration in the CMS.

• The registration will be open until Thursday, November 27th, at 23:59. There will be no possibility of late registration.

• You are allowed to bring a single(!) handwritten(!) DIN A4-sheet. You may write on both sides. Photocopies and printouts are not allowed!

• Relevant for the midterm is the lecture content so far.

• The exam will have 32 regular (that is, non-bonus) points that count towards the admission for the endterm and re-exam.

• There will be no assignment sheet released on Friday, November 28th, so you can use the week to prepare for the midterm.

• Further information for the exam will follow closer to the exam.

The tutorials have been assigned. You can see which tutorial you were assigned to in your Personal Status page on the CMS. The first tutorial will be on the upcoming Tuesday.

Should this assigned tutorial slot for some reasons not work for you anymore, you can swap tutorials if you find a person in a different tutorial to swap with. In this case, write an email to the Assistant.

Forum Active

We have a published a forum, which you can use as an additional way of communication among each other and with the lecture staff. You can find it on the CMS in the menu bar. Note that the forum is maintained at a best-effort basis. Other ways to ask questions are your tutorials & the office hours. Speaking of which...

Office Hours

There will be two office hours every week (starting with the upcoming week):

• Tueday, 4:15pm
• Thursday 2:15pm

Both office hours are in E1.3, seminar room 013.

Reminder: Submission Groups

You have until the upcoming Tuesday  (21st October at 23:59) to register your submission groups in the CMS. In order to do that, you have to go to your Personal Status page on the CMS, where you will find buttons to join or create groups.

Groups can be up to 3 people and are independent of the assigned tutorial slots.

Reminder: Exercise Sheet

The deadline for the first exercise sheet is on the upcoming Friday at 8am. The submission will open between Wednesday and Thursday, at which point you will be able to upload your solutions on your Personal Status page.
